There’s nothing better than finding a great hidden gem, especially an eatery like Ormer, the newest Shaun Ranking restaurant hosted in the heart of Mayfair within boutique Flemmings Hotel. Not only Michelin star worthy but also one of the top 5 restaurants in London as voted by the Hardens Restaurant Guide 2018.
“Shaun Rankin received a Michelin star in 2005 for his first restaurant in the Channel Islands. He held this for eight years until the launch of his second restaurant in 2013 for which he was awarded a Michelin star just four months after opening. His latest venture at Ormer Mayfair continues this celebration in the accolades it has received since opening.”
Once you’ve accessed the hotel you’ll head across the stylish Lobby and descend the marble-like staircase to take-in Ormer in all its glory. The geometric carpet draws you into the warm and elegant dining room, kitted with leather seating, dark wooden tables topped an abatjour keeping the atmosphere intimate whilst white cotton placemats are paired with fine porcelain and long stemmed wine glasses, honing on Ormer’s classic-yet-updated menu.
Fine dining has the importance of keeping both the eye and the palate happy, and with every dish, Ormer holds both simultaneously. Dishes are presented like art pieces or Lego blocks, perfectly built atop each other or deconstructed and even though the menu remains quite classic, tastes are extraordinary. Ingredients are carefully selected and handled to create harmonious seasonal dishes paired with their fine wine offering thanks to their highly trained Sommelier.
Warm bread and soft whipped butter are served on arrival to the table, alongside an amuse-bouche of parmesan cream silky to the taste topped with pork crackling that gives crunch and blends the ideas of fine dining and home comforts. An absolute must try is the glazed rabbit loin with asparagus, peas, truffle and gnocchi, a delicate mix of European delicacies that are orchestrated beautifully with its truffle notes.
Another great plate on offer is the Challans duck with BBQ foie gras, pomelo, cabbage, and granola served on white plates that allow it to bask, accompanied by a small cooking pot with perfectly seared and sliced medium rare duck breast. Food is served throughout the day with Ormer also sporting a lunch and dinner service with Rankin ordering up fresh ingredients daily that preserves his Britsh fine dining experience and culinary trip.
