Hotel Zoo, Berlin

Words by Marvin Maddix

We arrived to Berlin’s Zoo hotel on early check in and had great first impressions from the team there. Despite our official 3pm check in time our room was made ready on arrival, bags were collected by the concierge and room keys handed to us.

On arrival your met with just one of the boutique hotels designer collaborations. The Diane Von Furstemberg Leopard themed emerald carpet connects you to the 7 meters tall Living room/ lobby and the hotels Grace Bar and restaurant. The atmosphere is kept elegant and lavish from the stone fireplace, velvet sofas and Scandic inspired glass tables. This feeling of opulence is heightened with the sprinkling of fresh flowers, soft furnishing and open air corner bar.

Everything in the Hotel recalls the theme of being at the Zoo. From statues, pictures and paintings of Animals in the living room and Grace Bar and Restaurant where buffet and fresh made on order breakfast is served daily. (Take note that Grace restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays.)

This 19th century Hotel holds an impressive 145 rooms and Suites. Opened in 1911 this was in the heart of “European’s Hollywood” were most cabaret theatres and cinemas showcased but also Zoo was centre stage for celebrity stays and visits and Paparazzi was always on there doorstep. (hence the paparazzi inspired lift) In 2012 the hotel closed for refurbishment and Re-opened in 2014 with the interior design by the American designer Dayna Lee.

Rooms are kitted out with towels, robes and throws all designed by Maison Martin Margiela and can all be purchased from the in room shopping guide. The sleep is brilliant, we found the sheet kept us warm but airy and really couldn’t ask for better. The spacious rooms and suites upkeep the hotels bold aestetic, featuring bespoke furnishings and holds the spirit of Berlin.
