New documentary ‘Gay in the Black Barbershop’


This trailer by Harlem, filmmaker Derrick L. Middleton was released last year and addresses the stigma around being gay in a black barbershop. The documentary correctly titled “Shape Up: Gay in the Black Barbershop.“sheds light on the culture of “homophobia” that persists in places of business such as this one.

“It is time for dialogue — a conversation of the minds to bring an end to what many gay men of color like me experience daily when we want to simply get into the shop and get out,” Middleton told NBC OUT.
