We’ve awaited its opening for a while. When we heard the Dreamettes would be opening in London’s West End there was nothing but pure excitement at FGUK HQ. Dreamgirls that opened last year December at the Savoy Theatre in London, 35 years after originally opening on Broadway, FGUK had finally received the opportunity to see the story of Effie White come alive on Broadway.
Glee star Amber Riley plays the role of ‘Effie White’ with the role also being played by Marisha Wallace and is joined by Liisi LaFontaine as Deena Jones and Ibinabo Jack as Lorrell Robinson as the Dreams. Joe Aaron Reid plays Curtis Taylor Jr, Adam J. Bernard plays Jimmy Early (a role for which he won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical), Tyrone Huntley plays C.C. White, Nicholas Bailey plays Marty and Lily Frazer plays Michelle Morris. Further cast includes Michael Afemaré, Jocasta Almgill, Callum Aylott, Hugo Batista, Samara Casteallo, Chloe Chambers, Carly Mercedes Dyer, Joelle Dyson, Kimmy Edwards, Candace Furbert, Nathan Graham, Ashley Luke Lloyd, Gabriel Mokake, Siân Nathaniel-James, Sean Parkins, Kirk Patterson, Ryan Reid, Rohan Richards, Noel Samuels, Durone Stokes and Tosh Wanogho-Maud.
Dreamgirls offers a night full of extravagance and exceptional song and dance. Your taken on the journey of the Chicago, Illinois born group ‘The Dreams’, as you experience, cry and smile as they learn the hard show business. The ups and downs and the classic Hollywood songs and reditions of ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’, ‘I Am Changing’, ‘Listen’ and ‘One Night Only’.
What we do think went a miss is the viewers understanding of story line. The quick changes, strategically placed actors and extras and scene switches might just go over the head if you aren’t familiar with the story line and the characters.
We do think this trouser-dropping, Glitter Full production is nothing but magical and the true to story focus with Effie stealing all the lime light and is nothing but well deserved.
