Did Porto’s ModaPortugal just present the Future of Emerging fashion.

I think we all ask ourselves where is fashion going? but also which emerging city will next become the melting pot of this new design? we’ve seen fashion shift from London to Paris and 2019 may just see Porto’s ModaPortugal take center stage on any editors Fashion season calendar.

This was the first year FGUK Magazine was invited to see the partnership between CENIT (Textile Intelligence Center) together with ModaLisboa, ANIVEC and APICCAPS to bridge the gap between designer and manufacturer and we were very impressed by the international selection of new face design-students but also the level of craftsmanship from some of these young designers, selected from some of the best fashion institutions and universities in-and-around the EU.

Schools to participate were ESMOD PARIS (France) represented by Lorena Mazo French, Céléna Delval and Zhikai Yang. AMD – Akademie Mode&Design (Germany) represented by Lukas Viering & Mercel Mentzel, Selina Zenker and Frank Jia Bin Lin.  POLIMODA (Italy) represented by Giulia Masciangelo, Giuseppe Simeoli, and Camilla Gallerini. ESAD (Portugal) with Rafaela Santos; FA.ULISBOA (Portugal) with Carlota Martinez and MODATEX PORTO (Portugal) with Artur Dias. IED MADRID (Spain), represented by Marta Fontecha, María Jesus Padilla and Carolina Koziski and not forgetting LONDON COLLEGE OF FASHION (UK) represented by Antonio Princi, Keefan Wang and Yujin Seo.

Each designer which ran between, menswear, footwear, womenswear and the in-between presented 3 looks each of their final year collections with the opportunity for six for the best collection by country taking home €2500,  plus the overall winner taking home €5000 in both footwear and apparel to put towards their collections.

What’s important here is the nurturing of young talent but also the teaching and understanding of business which is sometimes the afterthought when creating. What ModaPortugal has created is the cementing and foundations for a sustainable fashion business that doesn’t just work for the corporate but also allows for small runs and independent business growth.
