16 Things that Broke the Internet in 2017

Whilst 2017 is not over yet we countdown, in no particular order some of the good and bad that took the internet by storm this 2017. From famous selfies to Baby bumps. Check all below.

  1. HOLLYWEED – 31 Million Views

As we stepped into the new year the internet instantly had no chill. Los Angeles residents awoke on January 1st to find a prankster had altered the famed Hollywood sign to read “Hollyweed” following the legalisation of recreational marijuana in some USA states. The culprit or as we like to call him, “Real fucking G” was never discovered but this isn’t the first time its happened.

1976 saw Danny Finegood do the same thing in response to the relaxing rules concerning marijuana and in 1987 changed it to read “Ollywood” in protest over the positive treatment of Col Oliver North, the marine at the center of the Iran-Contra scandal.

2. Emilia Clarke – John Snow Video – 17.7 Mil Views

For those who might just have woken up from under a very heavy rock, Emilia Clarke who plays Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO series Game of Thrones this year made Instagram history when Mother of Dragons (aka Khaleesi IRL) posted a video on set whilst filming the last season of GOT. While the video has racked up over 17.7 million views and was more than enough, the hashtags that accompanied the share slayed in every way. #youknownothingjonsnow

I mean, JEEEZE, one pet of a dragon and he thinks he's one of them. 🤦‍♀️ #youknownothingjonsnow #butyoudoknowhowtonotgetblownoffacliffingaleforsewindssotheresalwaysthat 🕺 #everypunaboutwindicanthinkofinserthere 💨

3. Beyonce Pregnant – 11.5 MIL LIKES

Queen B had to make it to this list, we’re not surprised. New celebrity babies just seem to do something to the internet and us. Bey’s surprise pregnancy photo is now the most liked Instagram photos of 2017 with over 11.2 million likes, dethroning Selena Gomez’s Coca-ColaInstagramm ad. Rock on Queen B.

4. Selena Gomez – 10.3 MIL LIKES

When Selena went quite after her many 2017 releases fans got suspicious. Rumours of pregnancy, heartbreak, and stories debuted across the web, little did we know the 25-year-old singer was suffering from lupus and had been recovering from a kidney transplant. September all rumors were silenced when Gomez shared an Instagram post with her and her good friend Francia Raisa who donated her kidney. With Selena holding the title for most followed celebrity on Instagram this was bound to make our round-up.

I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. 5. Kylie Jenner Bathroom Selfie Met Gala – 3.5 MIL LIKES

This might not be one of the top liked or shared images of 2017, but there is something about a good bathroom selfie that just can’t be ignored. Despite Met Gala’s “no selfie” rule, (yes, they made that a rule), Kylie Jenner had to get her annual bathroom selfies at this years 2017 Met Ball. The social star featured in an epic selfie in her Versace dress along stars such as Lily Aldridge, A$AP Rocky, Elizabeth Chambers Hammer, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Paris Jackson, Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Brie Larson, Frank Ocean, Ashton Sanders and Slick Woods. The images have racked up over 3.5 million likes and countless reposts.

6. Free Chicken Nuggets – Carter Wilkerson 2.6 Mil Retweet

Ellen Degeneres lost the title on most retweeted photo this year when, April 5th, 16-year-old Carter Wilkerson tweeted at Wendy’s asking how many retweets it would take to get a year of free chicken nuggets. The fast-food eatery came back with a figure of 18 million. Wilkerson was now on a mission. While he didn’t come close to the 18 million, the public respected his pursuit. The tweet received over 3.42 million retweets and the Nevada high schooler was rewarded still by Wendy’s with 1 year of free nuggets and $100,000 donation to a charity of his choice.

7. Minaj A Trois – 2.4 Million Likes

Dare we say this is one of the sexiest attempts PAPER Magazine has ever done to break the internet. Nicki Minaj was the cover girl of the Autumn issues of Paper sporting three separate looks, with three alternative Nicki’s. You can’t put a definite number on how many times this has been viewed but the image inspired countless memes and re-actions that surpassed Kim’s balancing act of previous years.

8. Barack Obama Tweet Charlottesville – 1.7 Mil Retweet

Goes to show more than just celebrity cock-ups and babies can go viral. The great former president Barack Obama also seems to make headlines this year and always has the right words to say and we took notice. Obama tweeted following the Charlottesville racial attacks that left many black and coloured people injured and hospitalised by the white supremacist’s rally, Obama took to Twitter and quoted Nelson Mandala and now is the most-like tweet of all time. Gosh, we love this man.

9. Taylor Swift – Look What You Made Me Do Most Viewed Video In 24H

Taylor Swift definitely made headlines this year, whether it was a battle with fellow celebrities, break-ups or new releases. The lyrics video of the track had received over 19 million views in just 24 hours on Youtube and was declared the most viewed video in a 24 hour period.

10. Ariana Grande – Manchester Bombing Tribute

In May 2017 devastation struck when Ariana Grande’s Dangerous woman Manchester Leg of the European tour was attacked by a suicide bomber. 22 people died and 116 were left injured. As a result, Grande jumped to support the families holding a tribute concert weeks later. The Instagram video of the live tribute concert has racked up more than 1.1 million likes and 3.2 million views.

At the close of this European leg of my Dangerous Woman tour, I just wanted to thank you properly for the overwhelming love and support you’ve shown me, my crew, and each other during this challenging time. 11. Kim Kardashian- Black Face

Now there’s no way Kim Kardashian couldn’t make this list and of course, she caused slight controversy this year. From announcing her third baby via surrogate to her imitation of the Beyonce glitter images, it was Kim Kardashian’s unveiling of KKW Beauty that got us all riled up. After its release in June, Twitter accused the reality star of Black face. While she states she was just heavily tanned we know Kim Kardashian does go in and out of what race she’d like to be.

12. Cash me Ousside, How Bow Dah –  Danielle Bregoli

“Cash me Ousside, How Bow Dah” is nothing but one of the gem statements that followed us from 2016 and into 2017. When 13-year-old DANIELLE BREGOLI went to daytime talk show Dr.Phil to discuss her behavior, she was taking no bullshit. When The audience decided to laugh at her, Bregoli or stage name Bhad Bhabie internet sensation was born.

13. Melania Vs Trump

While we can guess and say Melanie might just have bitten more than she was willing to chew when marrying Donald Trump, her endless showcases of distaste for the president-elect is hilarious. During this year’s Inauguration of the 45th president of the United states Melania cops a smile when Trump turns to look at her, soon as his back is turned her smile is wiped from her face, and it was all caught on tape. We’re not sure what she was thinking but we do know that since then, the hashtags #FreeMelania and #SadMelania took hold on social media and has been used hundreds of thousands of times over.

14. Dancing Hotdog Snapchat

When summer began, Snapchat decided on a new filter. The dancing hotdog went viral, from cat videos, NSFW memes and some of the most random locations. The Hotdog filter which has since been removed took the internet and brought us together, even if it was only to see him balance on a cats nose.

15. Szechuan Sauce 1998 – Rick And Morty 2013

1998 saw McDonald’s released their Szechuan Sauce and it wasn’t till 2017 that we saw the internet really appreciate its sauciness in all its glory. Originally released in collaboration with Disney’s Mulan, When the 2013 adult swim TV show Rick and Morty did a skit on the missed Szechuan Sauce, the internet demanded more and Mcdonalds answered that call; For one day only in selected restaurants across America. Szechuan fever began and videos and memes on the chaos of limited sauce in restaurants spread like wildfire.

16. Trumps Covfefe

So it seems Trump has made our list twice this year. May 21st saw Donald Trump take to Twitter (of course) and we were a little more confused than normal. The 45th president elected tweeted “covfefe” and we were all left wondering WTF. Despite his constant need to divide and concur the current president brought the world together to laugh about his blunders and whilst he might not have a clue about running a country, makes a great addition to Twitter.
